Discover The Plus Points of Home Solar Power Systems
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009With the increased focus on alternative energy, like solar power, many people are beginning to wonder just how does solar power work? Some of the concerns of consumers is whether or not this is something that they can implement in their own lives effectively and will it work to meet their needs. The answer is yes, and if you think about it we have been putting the sun to work for us for centuries but only now have we been able to harness it for power.
But what are the ways we can really use solar power?
Home Solar Power Systems
We can use solar panels to convert light into electricity. Lots of people have used this technology before in the form of solar powered calculators but never actually realized it. But just how does this type of solar power work? You can set up solar panels to catch light, and they convert it into energy. One square meter of panels will harness enough power to run a hundred watt light bulb.
Although it does not sound like a lot, think about how much unused spaced you have on your roof right now. Solar panels enable you to get free power from the sun using a system that does not utilize any usable space.
Also available are solar water heaters. This type of solar power works by using the sun to heat water Hot water is achieved by pumping water through pipes that are painted a dark color. When the pipes capture the heat from the sun, the water inside warms up also. 90% of a home’s hot water is what some companies claim their water heaters can supply. Some companies have designed their systems so that the water can be drained from the pipes in winter to stop the pipes from freezing, which is the only drawback to solar water heaters.
Solar furnaces are another type of solar power. A solar furnace is a group of mirrors that focus the sun’s rays. How does this type of solar power work? By focusing the rays, you are able to achieve very hot temperatures. Some scientists have used this type of heating to reach temperatures over 5400 degrees Fahrenheit. This kind of heating can take quite a while, but if you have plenty of time it can be a fantastic way to heat things at very little cost proving again the benefit of installing home solar power systems.
As the technology for solar cells gets better and better, this form of clean, renewable energy will find more applications that take up less space and produce more electricity, to meet the energy needs of our homes, schools and businesses.
